What is overage?
Overage is the additional cost incurred when API usage exceeds a plan’s included quota. Most SaaS and API products include a monthly allocation — tokens, requests, or compute minutes — and charge per-unit rates for usage above that threshold.
Overage rates are often 2–5× the in-plan rate. A tool with a $20/month plan that includes 1M tokens might charge $30/1M for tokens beyond the quota.
Why it matters
Overage is the cost that surprises teams. It does not appear in the monthly plan price. sourc.dev tracks the plan price as the primary pricing metric but flags overage structures where they are documented. If your usage is unpredictable, a usage-based model with no overage penalties may cost less than a tiered plan.
